Who we are

We are a team of Ophthalmic Medical Professionals including Retinologists, General Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Graduate Students, and Administrators who donate their time, talent, and treasure with the belief that the early detection of Diabetic Retinopathy and other ophthalmic disorders can help prevent blindness and improve the overall human condition.

Retina Care International was created with the mission of helping to improve the quality of Diabetic Eye Care in rural, underserved, and impoverished communities in Yucatan, Mexico and Imo State, Nigeria. Since our inaugural Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Campaign in April 2005, we have screened greater than 6000 diabetic patients in seven cities and towns in Yucatan using both dilated indirect and high- magnification ophthalmoscopic examinations.

More recently, we have been using Smartphone-based retinal imaging combined with Artificial Intelligence Software to identify eyes with Diabetic Retinopathy. This new, portable, state-of-the-art technology was employed in our most recent screening campaign in Owerri, Nigeria.

Our approach

Our Mission
Our mission is to bring quality comprehensive eye care to high-risk patients with Diabetes
Mellitus living outside the borders of the USA.

We travel to Yucatan, Mexico and Imo State, Nigeria on an annual or semi-annual basis conducting Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Campaigns that result in identifying treatable ophthalmic conditions such as Blinding Retinopathy, Cataracts, and Glaucoma.

Our Vision
We want to and are educating local Ophthalmic providers in cities and towns in the countries of Mexico and Nigeria, such that they are able to provide year-round eye care services to local patients without financial means.

With the financial assistance of Retina Care International, RetimediQ, a private multi-specialty ophthalmic clinic in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico was constructed and completed in 2012. This clinic has since been the hub of multiple past screening campaigns as well as the location for countless numbers of retinal and general ophthalmic surgical procedures.

More recently, Retina Care International has been providing financial assistance to AIHWA for the construction of a multi-specialty ophthalmic facility in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria to be completed in the first quarter of 2025.
